1. Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow (2015)
The modern-day story of the Emmersons visiting the serene town of Turkey Hollow. Annie and Tim are cold and bored to death until they discover the Howling Hoodoo. The burning curiosity, struggles, and wins of parenthood are great to watch.
2. The Turkey Bowl (2019)
A not-so humdrum story of a footballer, squaring back to his hometown for Thanksgiving keeps you entertained. The comedy pockets and the storyline focusing on the star character elbowing in and settling the scores in football with his former day high-school rivals is a fun watch.
3. Instant Family (2018)
A story of a couple who pictures that life with three foster kids is no plain-sailing jumps to a very different conclusion. A not-so-cheery Thanksgiving dinner clears the air. The couple figures that there’s a lot less drama and challenges in their very own families.
Is it a typical turkey day movie though? Maybe or maybe not! But, ‘Instant Family’ puts the limelight on family ties and relationships.
4. Pieces Of April (2003)
Pushing the boat out hasn’t worked in favor of April Burns who decides to host a Thanksgiving dinner for her mostly alienated family. She bumps into a stumbling block, only to realize that her oven has conked out. The story highlights how her crazy neighbors pitch in and put in the elbow grease to help April host a beautiful dinner.
5. Home For The Holidays (1995)
Would you be interested to enjoy the thrills of a dysfunctional family get-together? If you thought that your family was home to the kooky ones, watching the movie might help you think better. ‘Home For The Holidays’ spills the beans on family reunions and frenzy get-togethers that are crazy and orderless.
6. Love At The Thanksgiving Day Parade (2012)
Are you a sucker for the overly sweet rom-com? If yes, you couldn’t be down-hearted or go wrong watching ‘Love At The Thanksgiving Day Parade.’ The storyline kick-starts with two strong-headed nemeses prepping for Chicago’s grand parade on Thanksgiving. The shift from head-to-head tussle to lovey-dovey romance lifts your mood.
- The Ice Storm (1997)
In the 1970s, an outwardly wholesome family begins cracking at the seams over the course of a tumultuous Thanksgiving break. Frustrated with his job, the father, seeks fulfillment by cheating on his wife, with neighborhood seductress Janey. Their teenage daughter, dabbles in sexual affairs too — with Janey’s. The family’s strained relations continue to tauten until an ice storm strikes.
- Buffalo ’66 (1998)
While not a Thanksgiving movie, Buffalo ’66 is about being kidnapped and being taken to a family dinner. That sounds like a lot of peoples holidays to me! The plot revolves around Billy Brown, a man who kidnaps a young tap dancer named Layla and forces her to pretend to be his wife to impress his parents after he gets released from prison.
9. The Blind Side (2009): This biographical drama tells the story of Michael Oher, a troubled young man who is taken in by a wealthy family. The film is set in Tennessee and features several Thanksgiving scenes.
10. Friendsgiving (2015): This comedy stars Malin Åkerman as Molly, a single woman who invites her friends to her Thanksgiving dinner after her family cancels.
Watching any of these movies is better than the mind numbing football games that that most people have on for thanksgiving day, year after year and will add a unique touch to your holiday celebrations. Plus, any sports junkie will depart to get their football fix, leaving you with more food and better company.
